Subwoofer
A subwoofer is a speaker that reproduces the lower end of the audio spectrum. A subwoofer system typically includes a crossover circuit that filters frequencies around 100Hz and under to the driver. In a home theater, the placement of front, center and surround speakers is critical to the listener, but subwoofers are non-directional and can be located in a convenient spot. If your room allows, two subwoofers are ALWAYS better than one. Having two subwoofers allows for far better placement flexibility and tends to have a far more believable performance. So when budgeting for your subwoofer purchase, remember two 8” subwoofers will most likely sound better than a single 12” model.
Passive and Active Subwoofers
Passive subwoofers contain only the speaker (the driver) and crossover; an external power amplifier is required to drive the speaker system. Active subwoofers on the other hand are self-powered and include their own amplifier. With very little exception, most all subwoofers we sell are of the active type.
