The Marantz SR5003 surround sound A/V receiver answers the needs of all but the most demanding audio- and videophiles. With more power and a formidable array of behind-the-front panel technologies, it equals separate components in capability and flexibility. And it’s the essence of Marantz – a unique amalgam of style and quality that automatically attracts the connoisseur.

  • New industrial design based on the legendary Marantz Reference series
  • High Bit Rate Audio capability: Dolby TrueHD, dts-HD Master Audio
  • HDMI v1.3a repeating (3 in/1 out)
  • Audyssey MultEQ
  • M-DAX for compressed audio
  • 10bit Video converter to HDMI (interlaced to progressive and scaler)
  • Dual component video output
  • Analog and digital multi-zone outputs
  • In-line seven channel amplifiers/High definition audio design
  • New flourescent display
  • Updated backlit Learning remote control
  • Depth is less than 16"
  • Various control interfaces: RS-232C, Flasher-in, DC trigger
  • Multiple radio system (AM/FM/XM/SIRIUS)

The new front panel design is your first indication that the Marantz SR5003 is something special. Featuring a combination of aluminum extrusion and glass-reinforced resin, the panel adds welcome cosmetic sophistication as it shields internal circuitry and absorbs internal and external resonances. On the practical side, a new high density fluorescent display provides all the feedback you need to select sources, modes, and signal distribution options.

As attractive as that panel is, however, the SR5003’s real story lies behind it. Beginning with a meticulously engineered linear power supply based on a high capacity EI core transformer and specially chosen capacitors, the SR5003 follows Marantz tradition by mounting all audio circuits on a separate circuit board for maximum isolation from possible contamination from video and control signals.

The amplifier section, for example, features seven voltage feedback modules mounted in-line on an extended array of aluminum fins for maximum heat dissipation. Rated at 90 continuous watts per channel, the amplifier benefits from extensive use of components chosen only after extensive “ears on” listening tests.

And you’ll enjoy the latest high bit-rate audio formats such as Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD in both High Resolution and Master Audio implementations, as well as DSD (the data structure behind the SA-CD) and legacy formats such as Dolby Digital, etc. thanks to an advanced Texas Instruments microprocessor.

The Marantz SR5003 lets you get the most out of these sources regardless of your home theater room by including Audyssey’s remarkable MultEQ system. It examines your room and provides a virtually perfect acoustical environment for up to six individual seats. In addition MultEQ detects wiring errors resulting in “out of phase” performance losses, automatically configures bass management for ideal integration of subwoofers and full range speakers, and calculates proper delays and speaker levels to produce the ideal surround soundfield.

Marantz’s proprietary M-DAX (Marantz Dynamic Audio eXpander) makes even compressed audio signals (MP3s, AM/FM broadcasts, etc.) sound closer to CDs than you ever thought possible. As it dynamically analyzes a compressed signal, MDAX recreates the missing high frequency spectrum for your enhanced enjoyment.

You’ll be equally happy with video performance. Three HDMI inputs, all version 1.3 capable, and an HDMI output help you connect your high definition TV to the newest source components. The SR5003’s wide-bandwidth HDMI circuitry is ready to bring you advances like Deep Color and xvYCC Color Space And a Marantz VS3002 expands your horizons as it provides up to eight HDMI inputs for the most extensive array of source components.

For older but still valued analog video sources, the SR5003 includes extensive video format conversion and scaling capabilities thanks to the new i-Chips Technology video signal converter. This remarkable VSC inputs any video signal from 480i to 1080i and upscales it to the resolution of your choice. It even provides HDMI output for lower-resolution signals. You’ll even be able to convert 480i images to full 1080p format and view your videotapes through the HDMI link to your high definition TV. How’s that for maximum flexibility? You’ll also find dual component video outputs for additional TVs either in the same room or in different areas of your home. That complements analog and digital Zone 2 audio outputs, making the SR5003 an ideal starting point for a whole house entertainment system.

If you’re interested in satellite radio, the SR5003 lets you plug in either an XM or Sirius adaptor and enjoy your choice of commercial-free music, talk, or other programming. (Yes, you’ll need a subscription to the service of your choice.)

Other conveniences include an updated backlit remote controller, the ability to lock out front panel controls so your favorite settings can’t be disturbed by accident, and a shorter chassis that fits easily in a rack or on a shelf. A variety of system integration options (RS-232 communications port, DC trigger output, and a flasher input) let you enjoy your SR5003 as the heart of even a complex system.

As you consider the SR5003’s many advantages, remember the most important one – it’s a Marantz. And that means you’ve selected the best.

Marantz History

Saul Marantz founded the company that bore his name in the early 1950s to build high fidelity components. Working with such audio engineers as Sidney Smith and Richard Sequerra, Marantz constructed a series of vacuum-tube components that became yardsticks for the hi-fi industry. With the advent of transistor technology in the early 1960s, Marantz and his associates developed the landmark Model 18 receiver, the first example of a receiver combined with a preamplifier, power amplifier and tuner in one box. In 1964, he sold the company to Superscope, but remained with Marantz as president until 1968.

To continue the story, it is necessary to back track a bit, as it relates to Marantz' acquisition by Superscope. The Standard Radio Corporation was established in Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan in 1953 manufacturing portable radios. In 1959 the company started manufacturing tape recorders. A new factory was built in Sagamihara, Kanagawa, Japan in 1959 and this became the company's headquarters. In 1962 the company started manufacturing phonographs. With the acquisition of Marantz by Superscope in 1964, manufacturing of Marantz components gradually shifted to Japan, but design engineering remained in America for the time being.

In 1971, Standard Radio Corporation received third-party capitalization from Superscope of the U.S.A. In March of 1975, SRC changed its name to Marantz Japan, Inc. Superscope of the U.S.A. sold its shares of Marantz Japan to Philips of the Netherlands in 1980. Marantz manufactured its first Compact Disc player starting in 1982. Much if the Philips European design engineering made its way into the Marantz line of products, and the Marantz compact disc was one of the first proofs of this. Numerous improvements were made to the Sagamihara factory in the late 1980s. The magnificent PM-94 and PM-84 were manufactured at this time. These were a distinct break with the Philips-influenced integrated amplifiers of the mid-1980s, and a successful attempt at recapturing the legendary design and engineering that Marantz had become famous for.

In the late 1990s, Marantz reissued the legendary Model 7, 8 and 9 tube components and these were eagerly scooped up by audiophile collectors. These components were, in fact, engineered and manufactured by hand by the Valve Amplification Company of Durham, North Carolina. ( VAC is now located in Florida).

Then, in May of 2001, Marantz Japan, Inc. acquired the Marantz brand and its business in Europe and the USA from Philips. The company established Marantz divisions in the Netherlands, Germany, France and England. Marantz America, Inc. was organized in Los Angeles; the American division of Marantz had been headquartered in California for years. However, the offices were later moved to Itasca, Illinois. In 2002, Marantz merged with Denon and established a joint holding company, D & M Holdings, Inc. The Marantz and Denon product lines will remain separate and distinct.
