A quick look at the Marantz SR4003 may convince you that might be all you need. With power, flexibility, and advanced features, it brings you all the performance you expect from Marantz. And that’s quite a step above the ordinary, isn’t it?

It’s relatively easy to find a low powered or feature-short receiver in Marantz competitors’ product lines. But that’s a concept simply not believed in at Marantz. Instead, the Marantz SR4003 offers a full 80 watts/channel across the full audio spectrum into 8 ohm loads with less than 0.08 Total Harmonic Distortion. That‘s “separate component” performance territory! We get there with a power supply specifically developed to deliver high instantaneous current when signals get really demanding. The high capacity, low-loss EI core transformer feeds a capacitor array rated at over 16,000 µfarads so the amplifier section never ends up gasping for breath. You might – but that’s because the performance is so outstanding.

All seven amplifier channels mount on an in-line array for even heat dissipation. And their voltage feedback configuration takes full advantage of the audiophile-grade parts selected only after exhaustive auditory evaluation. And there’s a separate circuit board exclusively for audio to minimize potential interference from video signals.

As you’ve already guessed, the Marantz SR4003 handles all of today’s most popular digital audio formats thanks to an advanced Cirrus Logic microprocessor that puts you at the head of the pack in enjoying the best A/V sound ever.

The SR4003 even makes getting a pristine audio signal from your system to your ears a simple process, thanks to MRAC or Marantz Room Acoustic Calibration. Using internally generated test signals and proprietary algorithms, MRAC analyzes the acoustic qualities of your room and automatically determines your speaker configuration and capabilities, adjusts channel levels and delay settings, and corrects for virtually all room anomalies.

Other A/V features? The SR4003 boasts three HDMI inputs with “repeating” capability. This allows full audio processing within the receiver itself so your enjoyment isn’t limited to the capabilities of the source component you may be using at the time.

And if three HDMI inputs aren’t enough, just connect a Marantz VS3002 and enjoy up to eight HDMI sources with single-unit convenience.

For analog-based formats like composite, S-, and component video, the SR4003 provides flexible conversion from S-video to either composite or component format. And the new integrated front panel input terminals make connecting a temporary video source plug-n-play easy.

Want to listen to a favorite audio source in another area of your home? Just use the Zone 2 speaker outputs and you’re ready for some remote relaxation.

Want to be ready for late night listening? Dolby Headphone lets you enjoy a surround experience in private so you can listen as loudly as you want without waking your neighbor. Or the baby.

Speaking of younger – or less technically sophisticated – family members, the SR4003 lets you lock out the front panel controls so another person can’t accidentally change your favorite settings. That’s quite a blessing if your home echoes to beat of many different footsteps.

Don’t forget the new shallower chassis either. It lets you place the SR4003 in racks where other components have a hard time fitting in. And the chassis leaves plenty of room for the cable connections that tie everything together.

Reduced depth isn’t the only chassis innovation you’ll enjoy. The front panel benefits from both aluminum and vibration-absorbing glass fiber-reinforced resin. Not only does this combination allow sophisticated cosmetic design, it also damps both internal and external resonance so you’re A/V receiver operates in an ideal environment.

The SR4003 brings other niceties, too. The infrared flasher input lets it play nicely with other components in your system. And the backlit remote controller lets you see what key you’re about to press. It easily learns those other commands so it can converse intelligently with all the electronic citizens in your home entertainment world.

In fact, everything you really need for a great system is in the Marantz SR4003, including a redesigned ergonomically friendly remote control.

Marantz History

Saul Marantz founded the company that bore his name in the early 1950s to build high fidelity components. Working with such audio engineers as Sidney Smith and Richard Sequerra, Marantz constructed a series of vacuum-tube components that became yardsticks for the hi-fi industry. With the advent of transistor technology in the early 1960s, Marantz and his associates developed the landmark Model 18 receiver, the first example of a receiver combined with a preamplifier, power amplifier and tuner in one box. In 1964, he sold the company to Superscope, but remained with Marantz as president until 1968.

To continue the story, it is necessary to back track a bit, as it relates to Marantz' acquisition by Superscope. The Standard Radio Corporation was established in Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan in 1953 manufacturing portable radios. In 1959 the company started manufacturing tape recorders. A new factory was built in Sagamihara, Kanagawa, Japan in 1959 and this became the company's headquarters. In 1962 the company started manufacturing phonographs. With the acquisition of Marantz by Superscope in 1964, manufacturing of Marantz components gradually shifted to Japan, but design engineering remained in America for the time being.

In 1971, Standard Radio Corporation received third-party capitalization from Superscope of the U.S.A. In March of 1975, SRC changed its name to Marantz Japan, Inc. Superscope of the U.S.A. sold its shares of Marantz Japan to Philips of the Netherlands in 1980. Marantz manufactured its first Compact Disc player starting in 1982. Much if the Philips European design engineering made its way into the Marantz line of products, and the Marantz compact disc was one of the first proofs of this. Numerous improvements were made to the Sagamihara factory in the late 1980s. The magnificent PM-94 and PM-84 were manufactured at this time. These were a distinct break with the Philips-influenced integrated amplifiers of the mid-1980s, and a successful attempt at recapturing the legendary design and engineering that Marantz had become famous for.

In the late 1990s, Marantz reissued the legendary Model 7, 8 and 9 tube components and these were eagerly scooped up by audiophile collectors. These components were, in fact, engineered and manufactured by hand by the Valve Amplification Company of Durham, North Carolina. ( VAC is now located in Florida).

Then, in May of 2001, Marantz Japan, Inc. acquired the Marantz brand and its business in Europe and the USA from Philips. The company established Marantz divisions in the Netherlands, Germany, France and England. Marantz America, Inc. was organized in Los Angeles; the American division of Marantz had been headquartered in California for years. However, the offices were later moved to Itasca, Illinois. In 2002, Marantz merged with Denon and established a joint holding company, D & M Holdings, Inc. The Marantz and Denon product lines will remain separate and distinct.
