ELAC FS247 Floorstanding Speakers

Perfect in sound and design

The ELAC FS247 is the one of the highlights of the new 240 series. It has been subjected to the highest standards, in terms of graceful appearance and stunning sound.

Special attention has been given to three-dimensional sound radiation patterns with the aim of acoustically "energizing" the room in a consistent and harmonised way.

The bass reproduction below 50 Hz is characterised by its amazing quality taking into account the compact and slim cabinet design.

JET III Tweeter Technology - Discover the Sound

The ELAC JET III tweeter is one of the most legendary tweeters in the hi-fi trade and has won international world renown with its unusual transparent and effortless sound image.

The JET III tweeter was delveloped to perfection on the basis of the famous 'Air Motion Transformer' by loudspeaker pioneer Dr Oskar Heil. Its principle: a concertinaed foil membrane is driven by a strong magnet system of neodymium rods. This 'motor' drives the air considerably faster than the conventional pistonic technique. High sensitivity and extraordiary dynamics are the result.

Due to many additional design changes (e.g. new neodymium magnet system), a higher efficiency and a smoother sound pressure level frequency response up to 50 kHz has now been achieved.

The core of the JET III tweeter is the folded foil membrane. With a fold width of only 0.84 mm, a major requirement in the JET III production is precision. To guarantee the repetition accuracy and unchanging quality even with high output, only the gluing and the handling is automated by two SCARA robots. The folding and fixing of the membrane, however, are executed by hand under a microscope, as it requires special dexterity in which human manual skills are simply irreplaceable.

The results of ELAC's attention to quality and presision are simply stunning. The ELAC JET III tweeter creates an effortless and airy resonance-free image up to 50,000 Hz, and with its linear frequency response is ideally suited for the reproduction high-resolution audio formats such as DVD-A and SACD.

JET Dispersion Control (DC) - Adjusting the Sound Radiation of the JET:

The ELAC "JET Dispersion Control DC" is a flat ring made of open-cell rubber foam which is mounted around the JET orifice with four clasps (or with adhesive tape).

The JET DC results in a broadband reduction of about 0.5 dB of the radiated sound level nearly independent of frequency. The JET DC is best suited for rooms with little sound absorption at high frequencies, especially for rooms with large windows without curtains or with a smooth floor without a carpet.

All loudspeakers of the ELAC 240 series are supplied with the JET Dispersion Control as an included accessory.

Crystal Membrane for Woofers and Midrange Drivers

All woofers and midrange drivers of the ELAC 240 series contain the new "Crystal Membrane" (patent pending). Their design is based on the well-known "Aluminium-Sandwich AS Technology" which was developed by ELAC a couple of years ago. The crystal-shaped inverse aluminium dome is joined to the paper cone in a special glueing process that achieves the desired sandwich construction.

Special Glueing Process:

The stamping of the aluminium foil looks like the surface of a large crystal, this is where the term "Crystal Membrane" come from. This stamping stiffens the aluminium dome considerably which diminishes the membranes-internal resonances resulting in less sound coloration and noticeably improves the large signal behaviour.

The voice coil is not only joined to the neck of the paper cone, but also to the bottom of the aluminium dome. This design results in the expansion of the transmission range of the respective woofers or midrange drivers by nearly an octave. Therefore the abbreviation "XR" (eXtended Range) has been introduced.

Due to the specially wide double asymmetrical ('DAS') rubber surround, ELAC's TT 180 woofer can handle up to a ±15 mm long stroke. This provides maximum level supply and mellow low bass. For a driver of this size, such a large displacement represents a unique engineering achievement.

ELAC Bass Port

A special feature are the ELAC proprietary bass ports. As if from the wind tunnel, the double flare port has been designed so as to minimise ventilation noises and to reduce friction losses.

ELAC Bass Control Plug

The sound of loudspeakers is heavily influenced by room-acoustics. In some cases the room shape and especially the furnishings offer less than ideal conditions for the optimum set-up of the loudspeakers, sometimes resulting in bass reproduction which is too strong.

When loudspeakers are used close to walls or in small rooms and the bass is too prominent the ELAC Bass Control plug can be used to improve the bass reproduction by reducing the low frequency output.

Simply insert one or both of the supplied foam ELAC Bass Control plugs into the bass ports on your loudspeakers until the bass is at the correct level relative to the midrange and treble.

Speaker Grille Mounting

For perfect grille mounting without any distorting noise at music reproduction, ELAC uses new nickel-plated brass pins which smoothly slide into the designated rubber bushings at the loudspeaker cabinet.

Speaker Plinth Adjustable Spikes & Rubber Feet

As a standard feature, all floorstanding speakers of the ELAC 240 series are offered with plinth on adjustable ELAC spikes and rubber feet.

Terminal for Bi-Wiring or Bi-Amping

High-quality terminals with easily accessible inclined and gilded binding posts are also suitable for larger cable cross sections as well as for high-quality spade ends or bananna plugs.

ELAC History: A Company - A Philosophy

A name stands for the strategy

In fact, it is the name itself: Electroacustic. This is because the basic principle of the company, added value from ELAC, stands for engineering ingenuity, which constantly produces top performance at ELAC. This element has distinguished ELAC ever since the company was first founded back in 1926. And it still applies to this day. In the process, we have very specific ideas about how we develop and produce our speakers. They must satisfy the exacting standards we set ourselves. In this regard, it is about acoustics - as the name already suggests, about realistic sound. Authenticity. Adding nothing, leaving nothing out. It is all about quality, about longevity and reliability. And of course about fascination.

The result? Exceptional speakers for hi-fi stereo and surround applications, sophisticated PC speakers and other applications for electro-acoustic transducer systems in unsurpassed sound, technical and visual quality.

Principles

The particular characteristic of ELAC engineers is that they are never satisfied. They improve on what already exists and invent new things if these do not already exist. To achieve this, they can draw upon in-house transducer technology and their more than 20 years of expertise in room acoustics. This forms the basis for the high sound and musical quality of the speakers, with models ranging from entry-level equipment to high-end devices.

The speaker specialists from Kiel rely on the success factors “innovation” and “quality”, and pursue a strategy of ongoing technological development within the company. One premise is achieving the greatest possible sound from the smallest possible design. This leads to the creation of compact speakers, carefully crafted on the basis of the ELAC engineers' sheer passion for technology.

Made in Germany

Most of our loudspeakers are handcrafted in Kiel. We only use driver units produced by or only for ELAC. ELAC's know-how is protected by many patents. Every process is based on 100% inspections and a zero-error strategy, in the best traditions of “Made in Germany”.

The Customer's Rule

ELAC is entirely directed by the customer's satisfaction. Naturally, this also includes quality management management according to ISO 9001:2000. ELAC quality encompasses all production steps, but also the sales procedures and after sale service. Part of this is technical consult by specialists as well as warranty services.

Do-It-Yourself

Development and production under the same roof secure coordination of even the smallest detail. For this, the highly vertically integrated production at ELAC is a major prerequisite. Every working step, from punching the voicecoil formers and winding the voicecoils up to special treatments of membranes and the production of magnets, is executed within the strictest tolerances. Before the next step, the results are checked through adequate measurements.

Outline

The Schleswig-Holstein enterprise employs approx. 50 colleagues in Kiel plus 12 salesmen in Germany and 5 salesmen in specific countries, besides the representatives in numerous foreign countries. About 40 % of the annual gross sales are covered by export. Apart from the “ELAC traditional markets”, China, Taiwan, and Japan, the fastest growing export market is Russia, where quality “Made in Kiel” is highly appreciated.
