ELAC BS63 Bookshelf Speakers
Performance About Appearance
The "wide sound stage", the depth and the precision of the compact ELAC BS63 amaze - whether placed on a shelf or free-standing on a speaker stand. Critical hi-fi users and cinema enthusiasts alike get their money's worth because the speakers sound considerably larger than they are.
Thanks to a benign 6 Ω nominal impedance and a high efficiency rating, the loudspeaker performs particularly well with smaller amplifiers. The ELAC BS63 is best suited to medium-sized rooms
ELAC 60 Series Tweeter
Transparent sound is reproduced by this 25 mm tweeter consisting of a coated silk dome resulting in a smooth roll off at frequencies above 20,000 Hz without noticeable resonances. A special wave-guide together with the protection grille results its wide dispersion characteristics.
The ELAC 60 series tweeter's extraordinary power handling capacity is resulting from two design features: the compact high efficiency neodymium magnetic system with cooling fins and the aluminium voice coil cooled by ferro-fluid.
Additionally, the magnetic system is shielded preventing strange color distortions when placed near a CRT tube based television.
Woofers and Midrange of 60 Series
The midrange cone is designed in the ELAC proprietary aluminium-sandwich technique which avoids noticeable resonances in the diaphragm. The "Full-Roll" fabric surrounding expands the transmission range up to high frequencies to facilitate the crossover to the tweeter.
The spider is vented at both sides resulting in a symmetric membrane displacement which reduces distortions at low frequencies.
Of course, the design of the woofers of the 60 series are also based on the aluminium-sandwich technique. The wide rubber surrounding and the aerodynamic optimised - providing best air-flow - frame together with the spider being vented at both sides result in an extra large maximum membrane excursion.
The 31 mm diameter voice coil and the powerful magnetic system increase the force factor - more efficiency - and by this the load limit is increased and consequently the deficiency rate decreased.
ELAC Bass Port
A special feature are the ELAC proprietary bass ports. As if from the wind tunnel, the double flare port has been designed so as to minimise ventilation noises and to reduce friction losses.
ELAC Two-Piece Bass Control Plug
The sound of loudspeakers is heavily influenced by room acoustics. In some cases the room shape and especially the furnishings offer less than ideal conditions for the optimum set-up of loudspeakers, sometimes resulting in bass reproduction which is too strong.
This happens mostly in small rooms or when loudspeakers are positioned close to walls.
A two-piece bass control plug is provided that can partially or fully close the port, so the system can be tuned to overcome the influence of room acoustics or improper speaker placement. This way, the upper bass output will be reduced, while the deep bass area will be slightly increased. This results in a deep, tight bass sound.
Speaker Grille Mounting
For perfect grille mounting without any distorting noise at music reproduction, ELAC uses new nickel-plated brass pins which smoothly slide into the designated rubber bushings at the loudspeaker cabinet.
Terminal for Bi-Wiring or Bi-Amping
High-quality terminals with easily accessible inclined and gilded binding posts are also suitable for larger cable cross sections as well as for high-quality spade ends or bananna plugs.

ELAC History: A Company - A Philosophy
A name stands for the strategy
In fact, it is the name itself: Electroacustic. This is because the basic principle of the company, added value from ELAC, stands for engineering ingenuity, which constantly produces top performance at ELAC. This element has distinguished ELAC ever since the company was first founded back in 1926. And it still applies to this day. In the process, we have very specific ideas about how we develop and produce our speakers. They must satisfy the exacting standards we set ourselves. In this regard, it is about acoustics - as the name already suggests, about realistic sound. Authenticity. Adding nothing, leaving nothing out. It is all about quality, about longevity and reliability. And of course about fascination.
The result? Exceptional speakers for hi-fi stereo and surround applications, sophisticated PC speakers and other applications for electro-acoustic transducer systems in unsurpassed sound, technical and visual quality.
Principles
The particular characteristic of ELAC engineers is that they are never satisfied. They improve on what already exists and invent new things if these do not already exist. To achieve this, they can draw upon in-house transducer technology and their more than 20 years of expertise in room acoustics. This forms the basis for the high sound and musical quality of the speakers, with models ranging from entry-level equipment to high-end devices.
The speaker specialists from Kiel rely on the success factors “innovation” and “quality”, and pursue a strategy of ongoing technological development within the company. One premise is achieving the greatest possible sound from the smallest possible design. This leads to the creation of compact speakers, carefully crafted on the basis of the ELAC engineers' sheer passion for technology.
Made in Germany
Most of our loudspeakers are handcrafted in Kiel. We only use driver units produced by or only for ELAC. ELAC's know-how is protected by many patents. Every process is based on 100% inspections and a zero-error strategy, in the best traditions of “Made in Germany”.
The Customer's Rule
ELAC is entirely directed by the customer's satisfaction. Naturally, this also includes quality management management according to ISO 9001:2000. ELAC quality encompasses all production steps, but also the sales procedures and after sale service. Part of this is technical consult by specialists as well as warranty services.
Do-It-Yourself
Development and production under the same roof secure coordination of even the smallest detail. For this, the highly vertically integrated production at ELAC is a major prerequisite. Every working step, from punching the voicecoil formers and winding the voicecoils up to special treatments of membranes and the production of magnets, is executed within the strictest tolerances. Before the next step, the results are checked through adequate measurements.
Outline
The Schleswig-Holstein enterprise employs approx. 50 colleagues in Kiel plus 12 salesmen in Germany and 5 salesmen in specific countries, besides the representatives in numerous foreign countries. About 40 % of the annual gross sales are covered by export. Apart from the “ELAC traditional markets”, China, Taiwan, and Japan, the fastest growing export market is Russia, where quality “Made in Kiel” is highly appreciated.
