What is DVI?
DVI stands for Digital Video Interface and was developed by the Digital Display Working Group to accommodate both digital and analog computer PC monitors.
In addition to being used as the standard computer interface for connecting computers to monitors, the DVI standard was, for a short while, the digital transfer method of choice for EDTV and HDTV display devices and sources until HDMI cables made there debut in 2002.
In the home theater world, DVI cables are still used today particularly with high definition cable boxes due to not all cable companies using newer boxes with HDMI capability. In addition, there are countless devices that have DVI inputs and outputs so they will be around for a long time to come.
If you have a device that has a DVI output or DVI input and you want to use devices that have the newer standard HDMI; no worries, HDMI is backwards compatible with DVI so you can get a DVI to HDMI cable or vise versus to fit your needs. Additionally, Monster Cable makes adapters that can be used with an existing DVI cable or HDMI cable to get the conversion you need.
An important note to make when using DVI with HDMI connections is that DVI does not transmit digital audio like an HDMI cable can so you will still need a separate audio cable to keep the sound going.
There are three different DVI formats; DVI-D, DVI-A and DVI-I. Monster DVI cables are all DVI-D single link cables which is for true digital video. The other DVI formats are for analog video transmission or for devices that can do both analog and video. For home theater, although there may be a few exceptions, most all devices are DVI-D single link compatible.
